Keyword Research is the process of finding and analyzing the words and phrases that people search for in the search bar.

  • What do target customers look for, what do they want to see?

  • How many people are looking for that information?

Keyword research is an important job for those who do SEO/SEM and Google Ads advertising.

The evolution of keyword research

Traditional keyword research is often based on personal experience, the name of the product/service provided, or analytical tools to identify keywords.

Keyword research is increasingly important and constantly evolving, the development of main keywords, related keywords and making articles based on those keywords is of interest.

But now, that traditional way is no longer as effective as before, Google is constantly changing its algorithm, making SEOs also have to constantly update their knowledge and ways of working. Some of the important algorithms that affect keyword research are:

  • Google Panda: Penalizes low-quality, duplicate, thin content.

  • Google Penguin: Penalize websites with signs of manipulation, spam, and abuse of backlinks to get high rankings.

  • Google Hummingbird: Increase the ability to recognize semantics, each phrase, not individual words as before.

  • Google RankBrain: Helps Google understand the search intent of each query and understand how users interact with organic search results.

Keyword research has become the daily work of SEOs, at the present time creating high-quality articles can completely increase high rankings for articles. Optimizing both content and keywords is the current way of keyword research.

The essence of keyword research

Google keyword research is one of the first steps to take when implementing SEO services. "Walk a mile wrong Li". Ignoring the problem of ranking or increasing traffic , not understanding the nature of keywords and choosing ineffective keywords leads to:

Target the wrong customer! That is when implementing SEO to the top 1, traffic still grows but does not bring revenue.

Now, let's take a closer look at these 3 points about the nature of keywords right below!

1. Every keyword hides a search "intent".

When researching Google keywords, pay attention to your own search behavior first. Take the Fuhlen keyboard for example! What would you expect to see when you Research Keyword “cheap Fuhlen keyboard”?

  • Reference price?

  • Buy a Fuehlen keyboard?

  • Or info about the Fuehlen keyboard brand?

Do you want to find information about at least 5 types of Fuehlen keyboards & detailed review of their prices and features?

keyword research

Learn about the Fuehlen keyboard

Search for the keyword “cheap fuhlen keyboard” on Google. What about the keyword “Fuehlen sm681 Keyboard”?

=> You have intended to buy this product and are only choosing a quality supplier!

From the examples above, you can see that:

Behind every keyword searched is a user intent! This means: If you choose the right keywords that contain product intent , you will increase your conversion rate even more!

Determining the right search intent will help you provide the most relevant and accurate content to the user intent (Search Intent). From there, target & deliver content that solves their problems!

Note:  To help Google understand your content and users to search for the right content, besides the main Keyword Research for SEO, you also need to  optimize the content according to Semantic Search.

This is one of the  benefits of SEO, or specifically, thorough and accurate keyword research. So, based on where to recognize the search intent of keywords?

2. Keyword Modifier – The factor that determines the user's search intent

When delving deeper into keyword research, the  Top SEO Agencies in the world realized that:  All keywords have the same structure!

What is keyword structure? Let me explain it to you!

Keyword structure - check keyword rankings

Graph of analyzing a keyword Keyword Modifier

A keyword will include 2 components:

  • Head (original part):  Also known as Seed Keyword (seed keyword) is the main word that focuses all the user's search focus.
Whether a user searches for “Cheap Fuehlen Keyboard” or “Logitech keyboard”, the search is still around “keyboard”.

  • Modifier: Modifier  Keyword is a keyword that when replacing it with other words/phrases, the meaning of the keyword does not change, but the user's search intent will change completely!

3. Identify Search Intent Using Modifier Keyword

Accordingly, Modifier Keyword will be divided into separate groups suitable for different search purposes:

Keyword modifier to determine Search Intent

Using Modifier Keyword to identify Search Intent

Example: “yogurt”

  • Intention to find information includes keywords: how to make yogurt, when to give yogurt to children.

  • Intend to review including keywords: best yogurt, is Vinamilk yogurt good?

  • Purchase intention includes keywords: Vinamilk yogurt promotion, …

Understanding this intent will help you optimize the content that is most relevant to the user, and at the same time increase the conversion rate of the website.

At this point, you have grasped exactly:

  1. The structure of a keyword

  2. How to classify keywords that match the user's Search Intent!

In the next section I will show you  how to do effective keyword research  by classifying, estimating conversion rates, and prioritizing your keyword deployment!

Keyword research & deployment taxonomy

No lengthy, theoretical… In this section, I will guide you in detail how to choose effective keywords; Classify & estimate the effectiveness when implementing SEO for keywords. Help you: Get the most searched keywords with high conversion rate Distribute the order of keyword deployment Save time and effort but still increase efficiency!

1/ Identify the field

To research keywords, you must first research the field and target audience; to choose keywords that are both likely to rank up and satisfy the needs of the target user.

It doesn't make any sense if you put your keywords on the front page of Google with great SEO feats; Get a lot of traffic but create no conversion value because of targeting the wrong market and customers.

2/ Identify Parent Keyword

To get a list of the best quality keywords, you need to know the right Parent Keyword; ie the original keyword as bait to search for other keywords.

Of course you have to go from your field, product, user to choose the right Parent Keyword. For example, if I provide SEO HCM services, the website will revolve around the topic of SEO HCM, doing SEO.

Then, I will put this Parent Keyword into keyword research tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, Kwfinder, Google suggestion ... to search for more related keywords.

Parent Topic on Ahrefs

Illustration of Parent Topic on Ahrefs . tool

3/ Analyze keywords

To analyze keywords you can use many tools like Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, but the most commonly used tool is still Google's Keyword Planner. Since this is a Google tool, there are many benefits to using it.

Here are 3 basic steps of keyword analysis:

Step 1: Choose potential keywords, keywords related to your product, topic, and field.

Step 2: Use the Keyword Planner tool to analyze the number of keyword searches by month, the list of suggested keywords, the keywords that are suitable for the content.

Step 3: Based on experience and available suggestions, select keywords.

Access the Keyword Planner tool at: https://ads.google.com/intl/ vi_vn/home/tools/ keyword-planner/

Tools > Keyword Planner > Enter keywords to analyze in the box and click “Get ideas”.

The results returned are the number of monthly searches and related keywords for selection reference. Or from the Google Search search bar enter the keyword you intend to use and the suggested keywords will appear, these are also suggestions worth referring to.

If your website has been active for a long time, you can refer to the keywords that users search for your page at Google Console. If these keywords are holding the top 7-15 then it is a good keyword to optimize.

A few indicators to pay attention to when analyzing keywords:

  • Volume – search market volume by industry or field

  • Difficulty – Keyword difficulty

  • Opportunity – Opportunity of the topic keyword

  • Potential – Potential

Search volume

Search volume tells you how many times a keyword is searched on average each month.

Trends (trends)

Average monthly keyword search volume using Keywordtools.io tool, enter your main keyword and see the results. The system will return the results of the keywords and show the popularity through the trend index and Search Volume.

Number of clicks

Clicks tells you how many clicks on average monthly on a search result for a keyword. This will help you with many important assessments later.

For example, the keyword search volume is very high but only low clicks are entered, you need to find out the cause and fix it.

Potential traffic

Search volume and clicks will help you understand the popularity of a keyword. But apart from that keyword, there are many other variations that you can target, for example related words, synonyms.

Keyword difficulty check

Keyword Difficulty is an index that evaluates the difficulty of a keyword to be able to get to the top of Google search results.

This indicator is not the same for each instrument. For example, Ahrefs calculates KD taking the average number of domains pointing to the current top 10 pages; Rank that keyword and score it on a scale of 0-100. This number gives a pretty accurate prediction of how many Referring Domains you need to be in the top 10 for that keyword.

However, this is just a reference number and does not mean anything. Keyword difficulty depends on your niche and SEO experience. Usually the shorter the keyword, the more extensive the keyword, the higher the difficulty. In contrast, Long-tail keywords are keywords containing more than 3 words, with specific content, so the search volume is lower, so there is less competition.

So if you invest in writing a really quality article about a long-tail keyword, you will most likely beat your competition, rank in the top 1 and get a lot of traffic for the website. This is a safe passage for new websites that do not have high trust in the industry.

Keyword Difficulty

Keyword difficulty is shown in the KD column as shown in the picture

Cost Per Click (CPC)

Cost-per-click tells you how much advertisers pay for clicks on ads from a keyword. This metric also indicates the value of a keyword.

4/ Keyword grouping

Buyer Keyword

Buyer Keywords are phrases that users use when searching for a product or service.

It is clear that when using the Buyer Keyword, the user already has the intention to buy and even knows what item he will want to buy.

Compared to the customer journey funnel, the user is at the bottom of the funnel, in the middle of comparing products and preparing to buy. That said, Buyer Keywords are keywords that bring high conversion rates and real value to businesses.

Information Keyword

Most keywords today are informational keywords; Users are merely looking for information, not intending to convert (at least at the time they start searching). However, that's not why you ignore this type of keyword because, as mentioned, most users search for them.

Informational keywords often contain words like how, how, tips, tricks, secrets… The best way to exploit is to find keywords with high search volume and low competition. I call it the Phantom Keyword, or the ghost keyword.

information keyword

Most keywords today are informational keywords, users are merely looking for information, not intending to convert.

Tire Kicker Keyword

This term refers to searches that can't immediately generate a conversion. Tire Kicker Keyword often contains words like free, torrent, download, for free…

For example, with the keyword "Watch Hai Phuong movies online for free", you don't expect to sell anything. Keywords like “Hai Phuong DVD” or “Hai Phuong beautiful version” will have a higher conversion value.

Navigational Keyword

This type of keyword, in a word, is a key that identifies a certain brand name, often with the brand name appearing in the keyword. For example, the keywords "ahrefs", "facebook",... Users search for these keys to find ahrefs.com or facebook.com pages. That is, they already know the final destination before searching for these keys.

Priority keywords

How are priority keywords obtained? Let's analyze and ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the traffic potential of this keyword?

  • Does this keyword have stiff competition? What does it take to rate it?

  • Do you have any ideas for this topic? Can that idea compete?

  • Have you already ranked this keyword? Can you increase traffic by improving rankings a few places?

  • Is the traffic likely to convert into leads, increase sales, or just bring in brand awareness?

Don't just look for keywords that are easy to rank for, look for those with the highest return on investment.

Focusing on low difficulty keywords is the mistake of many SEOs, as keyword selection is not solely based on difficulty ranking. You need to have short, medium and long-term ranking goals, so plan for each keyword with a different difficulty level for each period.

5/ Keyword research steps

Step 1

Go to  Ahrefs  >  Keyword Explorer  > Enter  your Head Keyword  :

keyword explorer - develop seo keywords based on ahrefs

Keyword research using Ahrefs

Enter your original keywords into Ahrefs to start keyword research. Note: Perhaps redundant, but I still reiterate the following factor:

The root keyword (head) is a phrase, not a word . This phrase can have 2, 3 or 4 or more words, not a single word.

Here, you can enter both “mechanical keyboard”, “game keyboard” and variant keywords like “gaming keyboard” to get the most keyword list.

Step 2

Select Matching terms > Phrase match > Export keyword list

seo keyword research - ahrefs

Export keywords that match your needs using Ahrefs

Step 3

After exporting, open the excel file, keep only the keywords and volume columns , omit the remaining columns, and add 3 columns: Classification , conversion and funnel.

keyword classification

Self-categorize keywords by separate categories

seo keywords - develop seo keywords

seo keywords - Develop a list of keywords for the website

Pick out the most important items to summarize.

Step 4

Classify keywords based on Modifier Keyword. In this step, you need to read through the keywords briefly, then identify the clusters that are counted as Modifier Keyword as I mentioned in the first part.

To avoid confusion, I often write down Modifier phrases at the top of my excel frame for easy searching when classifying keywords. You will see that around the root word “mechanical keyboard” there will be modifiers:

  • Cheap

  • fuhlen

  • Icon

  • bluetooth

  • what is

  • cheap price under 500k

  • fix

This step will be quite time-consuming, requires you to be patient (if the keyword list is too much) and needs to use some simple excel techniques to be able to classify quickly.

keyword modifier

Phrases whose main keyword is “mechanical keyboard”

Categorize keywords based on user search intent.

Step 5:

After grasping the best keywords and a basic website structure description table. You need to build a set of keywords for the best SEO plan, you cannot optimize thousands of keywords.

With thousands of keywords you collect and filter, you need to narrow down and focus only on the most important keywords, using keyword shortening is to remove synonyms and misspelled keywords.

AIDA Transformation Model

Effective brand advertising with search intent methodElements of the marketing funnel in terms of search intent and AIDA

Let me explain the above image in detail: In the AIDA traditional conversion funnel stages above and as I mentioned, these links are quite a good fit for the top 4 groups of search intent. Common patterns and modifier groups, commonly found in search intent groups, include:

Informational:

  • What – What?

  • Who – Who

  • Where – Where

  • When – When

  • How - How?

  • Why – Why?

  • Single word keywords such as shoes, shirt, pants, ...

Navigational:

  • Brand name

  • Product or service name

Commercial Investigation:

  • Color: black, blue, red, green

  • Size: small, medium, large, 32, 11

  • Gender or age: male, female, child, child, etc.

  • Keyword containing the word “vs”

  • The best

  • Location: Philadelphia, Seattle, NYC

Transactional:

  • Price

  • Cost

  • Valuation

  • Free

  • Cheap

  • Coupons/Coupons

  • Discount – Discount/discount

  • Sale – Sale/discount

Every searched keyword always has an intent behind it. So, understand the customer's search intent; Tagging keywords at each stage in different conversion channels will help you satisfy the needs of users. When users change their own Keyword Modifier usage , it means they want to go deeper in the conversion funnel.

study course

Every keyword found has a hidden user intent

Practical examples

Users type “ What is a mechanical keyboard ” when at the user stage at the top of the conversion funnel, they are looking for information – Informational about a mechanical keyboard.

However, if the user types “ fuhlen mechanical keyboard ”, they are in the middle of the conversion funnel. Thus, customers are still searching for Fuhlen products and comparing product prices.

The image below shows the correlation between the number of words in the keyword phrase you are trying to target and its conversion rate!

long tail keywords

Long tail keywords analysis chart

The image above shows that keywords containing 3 or more words (usually long-tail keywords) account for about 70% of total searches; and the average conversion rate is 3-4 times higher.

After classifying the keyword group, you copy - paste all the keywords into the Keyword Explorer search box to continue researching the most similar optimal keywords according to your requirements.

And continuing the article, here I will guide you 4 ways to research keywords for existing websites. Let's read on!

6/ Some ways to come up with ideas to expand the set of keywords

Using Google and Youtube Suggestion Box

Search the topics you find on Google Search, Google will suggest you other keywords for your reference. These are the keywords you should include in your keyword list, because those keywords are searched by a lot of people.

YouTube is similar, create content related to the keywords people are searching for. These are valuable keywords.

Find related keywords

In addition to the Google Suggestion Box, the footer when searching will have Search Related to which means Related Topics. Those are topics related to search results, these phrases are also keyword ideas for your reference, there are many people searching for those keywords.

Find popular keywords on forums

Forums are the place for lively, 24/7 discussion of topics, find a forum related to your field and start learning.

Wikipedia Table of Contents

Wikipedia is like a repository of data that cannot be ignored when researching keywords, as it is a place where content is created by industry experts and is arranged scientifically and fully.

To search for keyword ideas from Wiki, go to Wiki and type the topic you are researching. After the results appear, go to the Table of Contents, where the subtopics are mentioned, from here you can choose the appropriate keywords.

7/ Keyword selection strategy

Focusing on popular keywords with high search volume > this is the hard way that takes time, effort and the right method.

Focus on keywords with low competition but high conversion rate > Easy SEO way, on the right track will quickly get to the top.

The keyword structure according to Hub-Content includes popular keywords > mid-level keywords > long-tail keywords.

Short tail or long tail?

The short tail has a high level of competition but a low conversion rate. Long tails have low competition and high conversion rates.

Personally, you can first select all the long-tail keywords then build a content strategy according to the Hub-Content method. Focusing on long-tail keywords will go to the TOP faster. Because long-tail keywords will push the Pass Value to the mid-level keyword page and from there push the popularity.

4 ways to research keywords for existing websites

Existing web pages are inherently keyword researched. Unless…You block all robots from crawling and indexing the pages of your website. Except for that, you can get some data on how your site is currently classified according to context relevancy.

However, for an existing website, before checking the website is having standard SEO articles or not; You can apply the following 4 methods of keyword development to find effective SEO keywords:

#first. See a list of your keywords that rank for

The core of  this SEO keyword research  approach is to leverage Google Analytics (and Search Console). Data source from “Search Analytics” in Google Search Console:

keyword analysis google search console

Keyword Analysis of Google Search Console

Search Console shows the average position for each keyword ranked and the impact of clicks. However, it does not show monthly searches and you are limited to 1000 keywords.

>> What is Schema? Learn about schema right away to help Google understand the article better!

If you need more data, you can try “Organic Keyword” in Ahrefs Site Explorer feature:

Ahrefs' Site Explorer Feature

Ahrefs' Site Explorer feature brings a lot of convenience to keyword research

#2. Check out the competitor's keyword ranking list

Ahrefs has a great feature – Site Explorer can help you in referencing the keyword rankings of competitor websites. It allows you to enter any  URL  and automatically generates a ranking list of keywords. This is useful for keyword research for existing websites.

Steps:

  • Enter the URL in the Site Explorer section

  • Keeping "domain" mode, you will have keyword data files on the whole domain, not just that URL.

  • Ignoring everything else on the Site Explorer page, you just focus on the Organic Keywords section.

Chances are your competitors have already done this tedious keyword research for you. So you just need to research their already ranked keywords and choose the best ones.

If you still don't know who your competition is, type your seed keyword into Google, see who ranks at the top of the page. For example with the keyword "mechanical keyboard". I see a website headed by gearvn.com

keyword research example

Ahrefs .'s Phongvu.vn analysis results

Enter your website's URL into Ahrefs' Site Explorer and see where the keywords are ranking. Sometimes a competitor can have enough keyword ideas to keep your entire SEO team busy for a whole month. But if you need more, you can go to “Competing domains” to find more of your competitors' websites.

And we only turn off “Competitive research loop” when:

  • Enter the original keyword into Google and see who is at the top

  • Enter their website URL into Ahrefs to see the best keywords.

  • Search for related websites through the “Competing domains” section

  • Return to step 1 or 2

Note:

  • The trick to expanding keyword ideas is to repeat the process over and over.

  • And don't forget to click on related industries. You can find many good keywords that are not related to what you offer but can still bring potential users to your website.

keyword research

You can find many good keywords from related industries

TIP #1 : A single page can rank for hundreds (or even thousands) of related keywords. Therefore, it is best to focus on the page that is currently at the top of your competitors instead of searching for individual keywords.

Hint: Setting up “Top Pages” in Ahrefs Site Explorer

TIP #2: There are some keywords that all your competitors are targeting but you are not. So your best keyword has no value.

Hint: Set up “Content Gap” to quickly find those keywords

#3. Use SEO keyword research tools

Effective competitor research often yields a list of dozens of related keyword ideas. But if you are one of the leaders then that strategy doesn't work. You have to find unique keywords that no other competitors have targeted.

So, for more effective keyword research, the best way is to use a keyword research tool. Fortunately, there is no shortage of such keyword research tools on the market. Examples of the most commonly used tools:

  • keywordtool.io

  • ahrefs

… and many other keyword research tools.

keyword research toolResearch keywords more effectively using keyword research tools

No matter which keyword research tool you choose, it will always give you good keyword ideas. Just enter the seed keyword and wait for the keyword list and filter until you get your own "unique" keywords.

Most keyword research tools produce keyword suggestions from the following sources:

  • Generate keyword ideas directly from Google Keyword Planner

  • Google auto-suggest (Google auto-suggest)

  • Offer a “similar search” on Google.

Take advantage of the free Uber Suggest tool

These methods are very effective but rarely produce more than 200 suggestions. For example, UberSuggest only produced 316 content marketing keyword ideas.

best keyword research toolUberSuggest only produced 316 Content Marketing keyword ideas

The plus point of UberSuggest is that it also has monthly search traffic, I honestly don't know where they get these words. I also doubt they are maintaining their stats.

And this is also a free keyword research tool with many resources that people can use to search every day (Google, Youtube, Ebay, Amazon, App Store, ...); it also gives you a huge list of keywords related to your original keyword.

Through UberSuggest, you can find in this tool what is related to the search volume and competition indicators of those keywords.

Or pay for more professional tools

Better keyword research tools (Ahrefs, Moz, SEMRush) create a database of its own keywords and then suggest you more keyword ideas.

For example, Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer suggests 5,570 content marketing keyword ideas  . You can easily get lost in that huge list of keywords, so we can use filter mode in the following categories:

  • Keyword Difficulty – Keyword Difficulty

  • Search volume – Search volume

  • Clicks – Clicks

  • Clicks per search – Clicks per search

  • Cost per click – Cost per click

  • Number of words in a keyword – Number of words in a keyword

If you want to learn more how to generate keyword ideas through Ahref's Keyword Explorer. You can see more about keyword research tool - Keyword Explorer of  Ahrefs  to be able to come up with keyword ideas for the project.

#4. Effective niche market research

The keyword strategies mentioned earlier are extremely effective for generating many keyword ideas. but at the same time those strategies will also limit you to a "closed box".

Effective niche research will be a solid foundation for keyword research. Sometimes, research your niche well; You can find lots of good keywords that no one else in your niche is targeting yet.

Here's how to think "out-of-box" - get out of this box:

  • Put yourself in the shoes of potential customers: Who they are, what influences them.

  • Chat with your existing customers, to get to know them better, study the language they speak

  • Be an active member of social networks and communities in the niche.

out of box - niche market research

Search for keywords “out of box”

For example, if you offer website design services, here are some of the “out of box” keywords you should try targeting:

  • How does Google determine if a website is good or not?

  • Why does my website not appear on google?

  • Buy old website

  • How to solve when the website is deindexed

We look for seemingly unnecessary things for web design services. But these keywords are definitely easy for customers to know and buy services.

SEO Keyword Research Tools

Before embarking on a marketing campaign with any search engine; You probably have to go through the keyword research phase and split the list of keywords that align with your SEO and PPC goals.
