“Discover New Keywords” and “Get search volume and forecasts”

These two features will help you generate thousands of potential SEO-focused keywords.

However, this tool is designed with PPC (Pay-per-click) advertisers in mind, so there are many features in the tool (like keyword bidding) that won't be useful if you're looking for a way to do this. Use this tool to find keywords for SEO.

Here, I will show you how to use the built-in features to find SEO keywords in Google Keyword Planner.

Step 2: Select the tool

As I mentioned above, there are 2 main features inside Google Keyword Planner.

“Discover New Keywords” – Discover New Keywords

True to its name, this feature is ideal for you to search for new keywords. The feature's first field asks you to "enter products or services closely related to your business".

The value you get from Keyword Planner is largely based on the information you enter here, so think carefully about what you're going to enter.

google keyword tools

“Enter products or services closely related to your business”

  • With the option “Start with keywords” – Discover new keywords : you should enter words or phrases that describe your business (for example, “weight loss” or “coffee”). This allows you to access Google's internal keyword database for various industries.

#Pro tip: You can enter multiple keywords in this field and separate them with commas, then press enter. (For example, if you're running an e-commerce site that sells cookies, you might enter terms like "gluten-free dessert" or "low-carb cookie" in this box.)

Multiple keywords can be entered and separated by commas

  • With the option “Start with a website” – Start with a website : this option is designed for AdWords users. But you can also find a few keywords with this option using your site's home page, or selecting an article from your site.

After filling in the fields, click Get Results to get the results.

“Get search traffic and forecast keywords” – Get search volume and forecasts

This feature is only really useful if you already have a list of keywords and want to check their search volume. In other words, this is a feature that does not help you come up with new keyword ideas.

To use it, copy and paste a list of keywords into the search field and hit Get Started.

Copy and paste the list of keywords into the search field, then press “Get Started”.

You will now also see a page of keyword results similar to when using the “Discover new keywords” tool.

The only difference is:

  • You only get data about the keywords you entered

  • Google will predict how many clicks and impressions you might get for the keywords you entered

But no matter which feature you use, you will still get to the keyword results page. Now, I'll explain to you how it works and how to get the most out of this site's content.

Step 3: Filter and sort the results

Now it's time to filter your list of keywords by relevance from high to low. The keyword results page that you get after filtering will look like this:

how to use keyword planner

Keyword list after filtering by relevance

You will then see a breakdown of the page: At the top of the page, there will be 4 options including: Location, language, search network, and date range.

Keyword Planner User Guide

4 Options: Location, language, search network, and date range.

  • Location : is the country (or countries) you are marketing to

  • Language : is the keyword language you want to see the information in

  • Search Network : indicates that you only want to advertise on Google or on Google and their other search partners (including other search engines and Google products like Youtube, etc.).

    • I recommend leaving this information as “Google” only.

  • Date range : default “12 months” would be best.

The next important feature of the keyword results page is adding filters (Add Filter), including:

  • Keyword text : This filter allows to display only keywords containing a certain word/phrase. Let's say you just launched a line of blue t-shirts and you want to make sure the keyword "blue t-shirt" appears in all the keywords that Keyword Planner suggests, you can customize like after:

guide google keyword planner

  • Exclude Keywords in my account : This filter helps you exclude keywords that you have already bid on in AdWords.

  • Exclude Adult Ideas : Exclude keywords related to pornography.

  • Avg. Monthly Searches : Very useful in filtering out keywords with a lot of searches and removing keywords that receive no searches.

Eg:

You get a long list of keyword ideas:

blue t shirt keyword ideas list

Long list of keyword ideas for “blue t shirt”

You can click on “Avg. monthly searches” – Average monthly searches, to reorder as desired.

average monthly search volume

Sort keywords by “Average monthly searches”

This way, you will only see keywords that have a lot of search volume. Or you can click one more time to get a list of keywords with low to high search volume:

sort keywords

Sort keywords with low to high search volume

  • Competition : you can let Google Keyword Planner show only keywords with “Low”, “Medium” or “High” competition. However, the competitive score here only refers to the Adwords competition, not the keyword's level of competition to rank in Google's organic search results. So you can leave this section blank.

Filter keywords by level of competition

Filter keywords by “Low”, “Medium” or “High” competition

*Main notes:

  • Ad Impression Share : The ad impression rate also only applies to Adwords, so for the sake of SEO, you should also ignore this filter.

  • Top of Page Bid : The page bid is the amount you want to pay to have your ad appear at the top of the page for that keyword

  • Organic Impression Share : Organic Impression Share is how often your site appears in the organic results for each keyword. To use this filter, you need to connect your Google Search Console account to Google Adwords.

  • Organic Average Position : Average organic position is the average position for each keyword on organic Google. Again you need to connect to Google Search Console for this filter to work.

  • Broaden Your Search : “Expand your search” is a new feature that shows you keywords that are somewhat related to the terms you entered.

For example, when you search for “Paleo diet”, you will get the following list of outputs:

keyword suggestion list "paleo diet"

List of outputs for the keyword “paleo diet”

Step 4: Analyze and generate keyword ideas

After filtering the results to only the ideal keywords for your business, break down these terms. Specifically, I will show you how to analyze the phrases that show up in the “keyword ideals” section of the Keyword Planner.

analyze the terms in the keyword idea board

Analyze the terms in the “Keyword ideas” section

Here are the meanings of each term:

  • Keyword (by relevance): A list of keywords that Google thinks are most relevant to the keyword or URL you entered earlier.

  • Avg. monthly searches (Average monthly searches): this as explained above. However, this is only the range, not the exact number of searches

  • Pro Tip: Watch for seasonal keywords. Because seasonal keywords (like “Halloween costumes”) can get up to 50,000 searches in October and only about 100 searches in May.

  • Competition: As mentioned earlier, “Competition” here has nothing to do with SEO, but simply the number of advertisers who are bidding on that keyword. But it is helpful to see if a keyword has any commercial purpose. After all, the more people bid on a keyword, the more potential that keyword has.

  • Top of Page Bid: Top of Page Bid is another great way to determine a keyword's monetization potential. The higher the bid, the more profitable the traffic will tend to be.

Step 5: Choose keywords

Now you know how to use all the features and filters in Google Keyword Planner. It's time to take the final step, which is to pick out keywords so you can optimize your website content.

This is not easy, because there are many factors that influence the choice of a keyword. I'll help you choose a keyword from your list by walking you through an example:

(For this example, I will use the “Discover new keywords” feature, as this is the best way to find new keywords in Google Keyword Planner.)

discover new keywords feature

Use the “Discover new keywords” feature

Let's say you're running an e-commerce website that sells organic food. If you want to write a blog post about the health benefits of organic coffee, you won't want to use the keywords "coffee" (which is too broad a term) or "health benefits of coffee." organic coffee” (too narrow). But the keyword “organic coffee” will bring the best effect.

So enter that keyword in the information field and click “Get Started”.

enter keyword organic coffee

Enter the keyword “organic coffee” in the information field and click “Get Started”.

Look at the table of keyword results you get:

keyword results table

And here is the table of keyword results that you get.

So how do you know which keywords to choose?

There are dozens of different factors to consider. But usually I will choose keywords based on 3 main criteria:

  • Search volume: Very simple. The higher the average search volume, the more traffic that keyword can bring you.

  • Commercial intent: In general, the higher the competition and the suggested bid, the easier it is to convert traffic into paying customers when they visit your site.

  • Organic SEO Competition: Similar to the commercial intent criteria above, assessing a keyword's competition in Google's organic (organic) search results needs to be more in-depth. You need to look at the top sites in the results and see how to get there.

Bonus Step 1: Collect Accurate Keyword Search Data

Google Keyword Planner only shows you accurate search volume data if you are running an active Adwords campaign. If you're not running any campaigns, you'll only see data estimated at a certain range:

average monthly keyword searchesEstimated average monthly keyword searches over a certain range

In fact, keyword search volume often tends to fluctuate. So even the “exact” average monthly search volume you get is just a rough estimate.

But there is a trick that you can use to get accurate search volume from Google Keyword Planner without running ads in your Google Adwords account.

First, find a keyword in your suggestions list that you want to target:

choose target keyword

Choose a keyword you want to target.

Select “Add to plan”:

add to plan after choosing target keyword

Click on “Add to plan”

Next, click on “Plan overview” in the toolbar on the left hand side of the page.

plan overview

Click on “Plan overview”

And look at “Impressions” impressions, you’ll get results if you bid on that term:

impressions

See the number of impressions (Impressions) of the keyword

This number represents the number of people searching for that keyword each month. That way, you've got the exact search volume data for your keywords!

Bonus Step 2: Hack GKP

People often think Google Keyword Planner is pretty cool, but in reality this tool has 2 major flaws:

#1: It just gives you keyword ideas that are VERY relevant to what you type

Say, your business sells organic pet food. When you enter “organic dog food” into the tool, you will get the results:

keyword results organic dog food

Results after entering “organic dog food” (organic dog food).

As you can see, these are words that are VERY close to “organic dog food”, like:

  • Natural dog food

  • Brand of dog food

  • Dog's food

Google Keyword Planner is great at coming up with different versions of your keywords, but coming up with external keyword ideas isn't so good.

#2: You will get the same set of keywords that other people use

Google Keyword Planner is an extremely popular keyword tool. That means the keywords you find here are very competitive. Fortunately, a simple way to help you solve both problems is the Google Keyword Planner Hack.

First, go to the Discover new keywords area of Google Keyword Planner. Then hit “Get Started with a Website”:

choose start with a website

Select “Start with a website” in the “Discover new keywords” feature.

Instead of entering keywords, enter a URL from a website in your niche. For example, instead of typing “organic dog food” in, enter another business's dog food catalog page.

enter the category url of another business

Enter another business's dog food catalog page URL.

At this point, you will get a list of keywords that most of your competitors will never see.

competitor's keyword list

List of keywords that your competitors can hardly see.

These results will help you much more than you initially thought. There are many other sites that you can use for your Google Keyword Planner Hack, including:

  • Blog Posts

  • Press Release

  • Conference program

  • Profile page of an influencer in your industry

  • Podcasts,…

Basically, any page with text can be used for this technique.
