Surely anyone who has learned what SEO knowledge is and every Offpage SEO will no longer be unfamiliar with the concept of what nofollow is , also known as rel nofollow . But I'm sure you don't fully understand it 100%.
What exactly is a nofollow link? Why is it important? And does it help SEO or not?
In this article, I will explain all you need to know about what is rel nofollow and how to effectively set a nofollow link.
First, you must understand what the rel tag in HTML is!
What is rel tag?
In HTML, Rel is an attribute used to specify the properties of links. There are two main types of Rel attributes: rel=”nofollow” and rel=”dofollow” used to declare to search engine bots.
So what is the nofollow rel tag? How is it different from the dofollow rel tag? I will explain in detail later about this link.
What is a Nofollow link?
Nofollow links are links attached to the rel=”nofollow” attribute. When tagging a Nofollow Tag, search engine bots will by default ignore that link. Because Nofollow links are not included in the PageRank index, it has almost no effect on a page's search engine rankings.

Nofollow and Dofollow Link?
Nofollow and Dofollow are the values of the HTML attribute for a link to ask the search engine to recognize or discredit that placing this link affects the ranking of the website being pointed to.
Difference between nofollow and dofollow
As a user, you cannot see the difference between nofollow and dofollow links. You can click, copy or use the rel nofollow link like any other link on the web.
However, for search engine optimization, there is a big difference between nofollow and dofollow links.
The difference between this link is that:
Dofollow links help you search engine ranking. In contrast, nofollow links do not.
I will explain to you.
Google and other search engines consider links to be a key indicator of a page's ranking .
Link nofollow – Map of backlinks
In general, the more backlinks you have, the easier it is for your website to rank top on search engines.
However, they can only count dofollow links into their algorithm. In fact, according to Google, nofollow links do not count towards PageRank .
nofollow google tag
Google will not convert PageRank or anchor text on these links. Basically, using rel nofollow will help you remove some of the target links from the overall graph of your site.
And if links don't pass through PageRank (also known as "link juice"), it won't do any good for your website rankings.
However, there will also be some exceptions. (I will mention it later)
This is why when building links you need to have as many dofollow links as possible.
I take an example for you to understand easily.
For example, there are 2 backlinks pointing to Brian Dean's backlinko.com website. A backlink coming from the homepage of a reputable website (Ahrefs.com). But when you look at the HTML code of the page, you can notice.
This backlink is a nofollow link so it will definitely have no value for the ranking of the website backlinko.com
Example for inserting the rel nofollow tag
And the second backlink is the opposite. This link comes from a blog post that doesn't have as much authority as Ahrefs.com. However, this effective way to put backlinks is dofollow link . Now you know it!
This is a dofollow link
The second backlink will somewhat promote backlinko.com website rankings than the first backlink.

This way, you won't have to manually check the HTML anymore.
Why Search Engines Create Nofollow Tag?
Originally, the rel nofollow or nofollow tag was created by Google to combat spam comments in blogs .
As blogs increase in popularity, spam comments also increase. In particular, spammers will leave links to their websites in the comments.
Nofollow is often used on spam comments
This will create 2 main problems:
First, those spammy sites will start to rank extremely well in Google. This will push high-quality websites out of the search results.
Because this strategy works so well, spam comments on blogs are getting more and more out of control.
In 2005, Google helped develop the nofollow tag and included it in its algorithm.
These tags are instantly adopted by other search engines (like Bing and Yahoo).
What type of link should be nofollowed?
Any link that has a nofollow tag is a nofollow link .
But in general, internal links from the following sources are usually nofollow:
Comments on blogs
Social media (like links on Facebook posts)
Links on forum posts or other user-generated forms
Some quality blogs and news sites
Links from “widgets”
Links in press releases
And well-known sites that use the rel="nofollow" tag for all of their outbound links :
Quora
YouTube
Wikipedia
Reddit
Twitch
Medium
And here are some types of links that should be nofollowed:

The Noindex directive is a meta tag that you add to certain pages on your website. This tag will tell search engines not to add other specific pages to their index.
An example of the noindex . command
Nofollow links, on the other hand, tell search engines not to follow a particular link. So if you don't want your page to be indexed, bots won't crawl, nofollow links won't work. Instead, it's the noindex tag.
