Most people think of Ahrefs as a great “ backlink analysis” tool .

But really, that's just one of the small aspects of Ahrefs. So, in this article I will explain to you all about the metrics in Ahrefs, and the amazing features Ahrefs has in SEO and in business for you to tap into its full potential. And I'm sure, there are still many people who don't know or apply these features on Ahrefs competently.

But before I get into the main topic, I will explain a little bit about what Ahrefs is and why it is one of the most popular and growing tools in the SEO marketing profession.

What is Ahrefs? Explanation of indicators and applications

Ahrefs is a sought-after tool among digital marketers, especially professional SEOs. This is an indispensable tool for researching advertising strategies and business development of businesses.

What is Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is one of the great analytics tools in SEO. It is a Big Data (a big data warehouse) like Google used to analyze competitor websites, research keywords, marketing, find opportunities to increase website traffic, build links (backlinks), ...

What is ahrefs?

What is Ahrefs concept? Introducing Ahrefs Tool for SEO

Big Data is a term used to refer to a collection of data so large and so complex that traditional data processing tools and applications cannot handle it.

However, Big Data contains a lot of valuable information that, if successfully extracted, will help a lot for business, scientific research, predicting upcoming epidemics and even the whole world. real-time traffic condition determination.

Ahrefs collects data from billions of websites out there:

Ahrefs' day job is to collect data on the internet

Every day, Ahrefs bugs operate throughout the internet, crawling 6 billion pages on the network, and it will be updated every 15 minutes - 30 minutes. Currently, in Ahrefs data, they have obtained:

  • 12 billion links all over the internet

  • Update more than 200 million domains around the world

  • 3 billion Urls

A more surprising fact that few people know – Based on research and data on “the Most Active Good Bots”, Ahrefs is only behind Google in terms of information updates, higher than Bing, Yahoo, …

ahrefs

Ahrefs is second only to Google in terms of information updates

Through the above activity data, you can understand why Ahrefs is one of the most powerful, useful and effective web SEO tools available today when it comes to website SEO. Now I'm going to get to the main part, the metrics in Ahrefs.

How does Ahrefs help SEO?

1. Perform Backlink Audit

Audit link profile is one of the first things to do when starting a new SEO campaign. Ahrefs will provide a huge data source for comprehensive link profile analysis allowing you to know the quality of backlinks.

2. Find potential links

Finding link opportunities from your competitors is one of the most powerful features of this analytics tool. With Ahrefs, not only expand the link source, but also have the opportunity to get quality backlinks like the competition. Too attractive, right?

So how to use Ahrefs to get links from competitors?

First open Ahrefs Site Explorer and enter the competitor URL in the search bar.

Select Backlink profile => Backlinks . After obtaining competitor backlink data, you need to test, refine and constantly optimize the strategy of getting backlinks from reputable websites (also known as outreach).

The basic process will be as follows:

Find new link opportunities => Filter quality links => Find contact information => Build relationships => Suggestions => Send email asking for backlinks => If successful, you will have new backlinks.

What is ahref?

The process of using Ahrefs to get links from competitors

Therefore, it is possible that SEO depends on the ability to build relationships with industry leaders. In addition, keep in mind that the above process will vary according to different types of backlinks, for example, Guest Post backlinks will have a different way of doing backlinks from Broken Link.

And pay attention to the attitude and style when contacting the website owner because no one has to spend time building their blog to ask for such a request. Some ways to build relationships before asking for backlinks:

  • Comment enthusiastically on their blog post

  • Retweet the post

  • Send a letter of admiration and praise

  • Send an email asking a certain problem (should choose intelligent questions and as if they need their expertise to answer)

3. Keyword Research

Many people don't appreciate the keyword research features on Ahrefs but they are wrong. This is the tool I go to whenever I want to find keywords or secret content ideas.

aherfs

Use Ahrefs tool to search for keywords when running out of ideas

Let's see what we can analyze from Ahrefs!

1. Analyze your competitors by going to Site Explorer and then putting their URL in the search bar.

2. Select Organic Search => Organic Keywords . Just coming here, you already have tons of great ideas.

3. To choose the most suitable keywords, you need to filter:

  • If you are a reputable and leading website in the industry, you can boldly choose difficult keywords.

  • If it's a new website, prioritize long-tail keywords. Filter keyword results by search volume (monthly search volume). 100-1000 is a reasonable number because these are usually low-competition keywords and long-tail keywords.

  • In addition, we can use other filters such as words (filter out Long-tail keywords), position (choose from 11-20 to know which keywords competitors are not doing well and this is your chance).

4. Track your competitors' new keywords directly by clicking on the new section to stay close to your competitors.

5. Find competitor top pages (based on Organic Search traffic). Here, you can discover what is "quintessential" of your competitors, thereby creating content and landing pages that satisfy market needs and satisfy Search Intent users.

6. Find competitors through Competing Domains

7. Use Content Gap to find high-ranking competitor keywords that you don't already have. Content Gap is a real gold mine to exploit and gradually close the gap with them.

8. In addition, when analyzing keywords at "Keyword Explorer", you can scroll down to the "Keyword Ideas" section to see similar keywords and find more ideas for standard seo articles. This section will display all the keywords related to the original keyword entered.

4. Keyword and competitor analysis

Downloading a bunch of keywords is easy, but the problem is how to choose from the list of hundreds of thousands of keywords to select quality keywords that have both the ability to be on top, and target the right audience and field. Ahrefs makes this easier than ever with the following sequence:

Step 1: At the Ahrefs interface, select Keyword Explorer.

Step 2: Fill in a potential keyword in the blank field, for example “fitness”. The results will appear as follows:

how to use ahrefs

Ahrefs also makes keyword and competitor analysis easier

Step 3: Refer to important Ahrefs metrics such as:

  • Keyword Difficulty: Keyword competition

  • Search Volume: The total number of searches that resulted in a click. For example, 28% of searches have clicks ie 34160 times users search and click.

  • Paid vs. organic to assess whether the ad is overproportioned to the organic results?

Step 4: Scroll down to the “SERP Overview” section. Click Export to load all the URLs that are ranking high for this keyword.

Ahrefs is also a great tool to help you check keywords about your website rankings, keyword difficulty you intend to target, etc.

Step 5: In the excel file, keep only the columns “URL”, “backlinks”, “Referring Domains”, “URL Rating”, “Domain Rating”, and “Facebook”.

Step 6: Average the total index of each column. As the following figure:

ahrefs toolCalculate the average of each column retained in step 5

Step 7: Paste your domain name or target Landing Page into the file with the corresponding indicators. Then, you can compare your strength compared to the competition to evaluate the competitiveness on that keyword.

5. Track competitor keywords

Ahrefs is a great competitor keyword tracking tool to find opportunities to increase website traffic. Go to Site explorer => enter competitor domain name => Organic search => Organic Keywords. You already have a list of competitor keywords, you can use a traffic filter to know which keywords are bringing the most traffic to your competitors and then write an article based on that keyword and wait for the traffic. update to your website.

6. Track Total Organic Visibility

Just directly tracking keyword rankings is not enough, the most important KPI in SEO is Traffic Organic according to Google Analytics data. In addition to GA, you can refer to the "Total Organic Keywords" data in Ahrefs.

Ahrefs has the feature to send notifications every time someone mentions a keyword / business brand keyword. This is an extremely beneficial feature for your Marketing strategy to help build brands and manage customer relationships effectively.

Ahrefs terminology and the questions surrounding it

Keyword Difficulty (KD)

Apparently, Keyword Difficulty is one of the topics I get asked the most. Probably because many people don't know how to analyze a keyword's difficulty or analyze competitors. So in this section I will make this clear to you.

“Keyword Difficulty” shows you the difficulty of a keyword to rank in the top 10 of Google on a scale of 1-100.

Keyword difficulty will appear every time you look it up on Ahrefs

Keyword difficulty will appear every time you look it up on Ahrefs

Note about Keyword Difficulty

It should be noted that:

For example, the keyword "old laptop tphcm" below has difficulty > 40. What this means to you, it depends a lot on how to do SEO as well as your experience.

I give this example… Assuming that keyword has a difficulty level of 45, based on experience, I would think:

“Ah, this needs 40 PBN to be top!”.

And person A said: "Must need 1,000,000 backlinks to be in the top 10!" .

Person C said "Oh well... 10 domain backlinks are enough for the top 10, the keyword is easy to come up with..."

Do you understand what I mean?

Never believe Keyword Difficulty

Remember, never trust any keyword difficulty assessment tool.

For example , my GTV SEO website , the keyword "seo service" is in the top 2, 3 of the market. But look…

With the Kwfinder tool, it shows that my website is hard to beat as…. first….

There's only 1! This means that my website is extremely weak, so the keyword seo service is also lowered.

As shown in the picture below, when I was in the top 10 from "service seo", the difficulty level was 28. Currently, if I'm in the top 2-3, the difficulty level is 24 =]]

The difficulty of “seo service” is 28 when GTV is in the top 10The difficulty of “seo service” is 28 when GTV is in the top 10

The difficulty has been reduced to 24 when GTV is in the top 3

The difficulty has been reduced to 24 when GTV is in the top 3

You get what I mean.

The truth is that before I got to the top from "seo services", this keyword was measured with a competition level of 28. But by the time I got to the top, its difficulty level was only 24. I don't have a picture to show you, because at the time I didn't think I was going to write this post ! – same thing happens with Ahrefs.

Therefore, you can take the Keyword Difficulty of any tool for reference. But never be too dependent on it!

To assess how difficult a keyword is, you need to use your own experience to analyze.

Refer to the article: "How to analyze SEO competitor websites in 2021"

Organic Keywords/ Organic Traffic/ Organic Search

For any URL/website put in Ahrefs, it will tell you that:

#first. What are Organic Keywords?

Organic Keywords (roughly translated: natural keywords) are keywords used to attract free traffic to websites from search engine optimization (SEO). Contrary to Organic Keywords, PPC (Pay-Per-Click) keywords are keywords that are bid on through paid search marketing campaigns.

Organic Keywords are keywords in the article that have reached the top 100

Organic Keywords are keywords in the article that have reached the top 100

The exact URL you put in that, at the current Ahrefs update, it is already in the top 100 of many keywords by showing through Organic keywords.

For example, it shows 592 Organic Keywords – It means that the URL you put in Ahrefs has 592 words in the top 100.

Perhaps you already understand what Organic Keyword is, right?

#2. What is Organic Traffic?

Organic Traffic is an estimate of the amount of traffic that comes from having a keyword in the top 100

Organic Traffic is an estimate of the amount of traffic that comes from having a keyword in the top 100

The number in this section shows an estimate of how much traffic that website gets from 592 keywords that are in the top 100.

But don't trust it too much. It only shows part of it. Because the monthly search volume that Ahrefs gives you is in Ahrefs data, not the Google Analytics tool . So Ahrefs only calculates the click-through rate based on Ahrefs' search volume.

This is where you can see two very nice charts depicting the movement of your organic traffic and your Organic Keywords.

What is Anchor Text?

This is probably one of the parts that many of you ask me the most in recent times.

The question I often get is: “ How to calculate the density of Anchor Text ”.

I understand why you would care. Because if you do it incorrectly or have an overdose of Anchor Text optimization, you can easily be penalized by Google.

See the article: why you are not in the top of Google here to explain Anchor Text.

Anchor Text is a phrase containing a link to a page on that website (in case of Internal Link) or on another website (in case of going backlink). In Offpage, placing the Anchor Text in a natural and reasonable way is extremely important to avoid getting penalized from Google.

Usually when I look at Anchor Text I will click on the word “Anchors” in the left column to check the Anchor Text.

Click on Anchor to track and check Anchor Text

Click on Anchor to track and check Anchor Text

Here, you will see 4 main columns: Anchor Text, Referring Domains, /dofollows and Referring Pages.

The dofollow column is the most important column

The dofollow column is the most important column

Here you should only pay attention to the dofollows column. Because this is the column that represents your Anchor Text.

To use the best Anchor Text, refer to "Case Study Anchor Text GTV & 12 Anchor Text Types ".

How to calculate the density of Anchor Text

In the Referring Domains column, talk about having 10 domains backlinking to your website using Anchor Text https://gtvseo.com/ (take the GTV page as an example).

But out of those 10 domains, only 9 are for dofollow backlinks. And there are 140 pages of those 10 domains for backlinks to your website.

Here you only need to note the dofollow column for 2 reasons:

  1. Google only counts dofollow's Anchor Text but not nofollow's Anchor Text to the Anchor Text rate of a website.

  2. If a website article gives you many Anchor Text but all point to the same URL. For example "seo service", "seo service tphcm", "Vincent Do is extremely handsome" are 3 Anchor Text on the article. But all 3 point to gtvseo.com, then Google will take the first Anchor Text it sees and calculate the Anchor Text density. If Google sees "Vincent Do is incredibly handsome" as the first Anchor Text, it will count this Anchor Text as the website's Anchor Text density.

What is UR?

UR stands for URL Rating which measures the backlink strength of a particular URL and the likelihood that that URL will rank highly on Google. It can be said that UR is based on a logarithmic scale from 1 to 100, with a larger value meaning it is stronger.

First we will talk about what UR is (URL rating). If you've been following me for a long time on Youtube, you'll see that I said these Ahrefs metrics pretty well in the early videos.

Ahrefs . URL Review

Ahrefs . URL Review

But in this article I will go into more detail and answer the questions you often encounter.

UR (URL Rating) measures the strength and trustworthiness of a particular URL. For example, gtvseo.com/dich-vu-seo-ho-chi-minh/ is based on the backlinks that URL has.

So you should understand that, Onpage SEO is not one of the indicators that strongly affect UR and DR, but it is a backlink pointing to that URL! UR is measured on a scale of 1-100, with 100 being the highest score

Similar to UR, Moz 's PA also rates a URL's strength scale based on the backlinks pointing to the URL.

Note: These metrics are all released by companies like Ahrefs and Moz based on factors affecting SEO. And they try to simulate how Google perceives a website as reputable/strong.

Therefore, you must understand that these indicators are NOT COMPLETELY 100% ACCURATE. But it is also close to accuracy, so it is one of the "hit" tools in the SEO world.

Domain Rating (DR)

Ahrefs . Domain Review

Ahrefs . Domain Review

Domain Rating shows the strength and trustworthiness of the entire website based on backlinks to that website. Note: These indexes score the website mainly based on Offpage SEO, not Onpage SEO here!

Compared to UR, DR has a lower accuracy in Google Ranking (ranking of a website), because UR accurately evaluates that URL and DR evaluates based on the entire website. So if you encounter Authority Sites (or sites with high DR), you can still win if you have a lot of quality links to your website.

Learn more: How to build super quality backlinks from PBN SEO top keyword "seo service" of GTV SEO.

But DR is one of the very good indicators when you choose it to conduct your link building campaign from forums, Blog Comment, Guest Post…

In general, you should get backlinks from high DR sites. If there is also UR, it is too good to have super quality backlinks.

What are Referring Domains?

Referring domains are domains that have links pointing to your website.

Answers about Domain Rating

Q1: “Why did my backlinks to the website not decrease but the DR decreased?”

A1: “Simply other websites (your competitors) have more links, but you don't.

Q2: “My competitors don't get backlinks from high DR sites, but why are they DR higher than me?”

A2: “If there are many links from high DR pages but those pages are all accessible to everyone (forums, blog comments, …), Ahrefs and Google will not appreciate it.

But if in low DR sites, in the same field and very few people have links from these websites, Ahrefs and Google will appreciate it more.

Q3 : “If Links come from low DR sites, is it good? Do I need to disavow (reject) it?”

A3: “The low DR sites that are relevant and very few people get links are also very good. For example, at GTV, I have a lot of links from DR < 40 but it helps me a lot in SEO”

Refer to the article: "12 quality backlink building platforms"

What is Ahrefs Rank (AR)?

Ahrefs Rank (AR) only ranks the sites in their database. And classified according to the size and quality of the backlink profile. The website with many quality backlinks, the higher the DR of that website and the closer the website's AR is to the Top 1.

AR is sorted based on the amount of backlinks to a specific website

AR is sorted based on the amount of backlinks to a specific website

Currently, Ahref is ranked Top 1 belonging to Facebook as the site with the strongest backlink profile; Top 2 belongs to the Twitter site; Top 3 belongs to Youtube which is considered as the third strongest website after the above two websites.

Answer about Ahrefs Rank

Here are the AR related questions that I often get when doing SEO:

Q1: “My backlinks are increasing but my Ahrefs Rank is decreasing. Why so?"

A1: “Similar to your DR decrease but backlink stays the same or increases as I explained above. Simply because other websites are getting backlinks FAST and MUCH more than you.”

Q2: “Should we focus on increasing AR, DR, and UR scores? Because it represents Google's prestige and power points?"

A2: “Short yes, long no! For the simple reason that an index is just an index. Ahrefs it's a good tool but not perfect. The truth is when I did SEO, I never paid attention to the index of my moneysite. Even DR, UR, TF, CF and DA.

Moreover, my GTV SEO's DA and PA are half the muscle. But it's still at the top of SEO services!

Regarding DR and UR, since it refers to the power of backlinks to the website, you can still easily "hack". Here I mean deliberately increasing its score by pumping hundreds of domains into the website. Even domains about the movie “Sech” also help you increase your DR score, but the thing is…

Google will still index your website or not, I am not responsible…”

Keyword Search Volume

With this metric, it shows how, on average, people in a given country search for the target keyword each month.

In the Google Keyword Planner, it is “Avg. monthly searches ”

Keyword Search Volume

Keyword Search Volume

And what I want you to note, Search Volume refers to the number of “searches” and not the number of “users” searching.

Next, another important part is the definition of “on average”. What does that mean? For many queries – user search needs will change throughout the year.

For example: Keyword “Christmas gifts” will have HIGH search volume in December and decrease in January.

The graph shows the increase and decrease in keyword search volume

The graph shows the increase and decrease in keyword search volume

Therefore, when you look up the keyword "Christmas gifts" monthly, the returned data will be the average index.

In addition, you must also pay attention to the Search Volume ALWAYS changes by location. So when checking Search Volume keyword, look for locations such as: US, Australia, Vietnam or global.

Here's where you find this data in Keywords Explorer:

Search Volume Keyword by location

Search Volume Keyword by location

Include essential information such as:

  • Keyword being analyzed;

  • Country requesting data and search volume in that country

  • Global Search Volume and a breakdown of the top countries by Search Volume.

Return Rate (RR)

Return Rate (RR) shows how often the same person searches for a certain keyword over a 30-day period.

RR1 means that people usually don't search for that keyword again within 30 days.

But RR2 and RR3 don't mean that people search for a certain keyword two or three times a month, respectively. It just means that the second keyword tends to get more repeat searches than the first keyword.

Eg:

RR is different for each keyword

RR is different for each keyword

The keywords “world cup” and “bitcoin price” have RRs of 2.8 and 2.7 respectively, which means that people are doing almost the same amount of repeat searches for these keywords.

However, both searches are low compared to the keyword “Facebook”, which has a super high RR of 3.7. This proves that many people search for “Facebook” on Google, instead of typing the URL directly into the search bar.

Clicks

I'm sure you've noticed Google's recent experiments with "quick answers" and various SERP features. They are designed to prevent users from having to click through any search results…

As a result, the gap between the number of searches performed and the number of clicks on the search results is widening.

Eg:

Search "Donald Trump age"

Search "Donald Trump age"

People in the US are searching for “Donald Trump age” more than 112,000 times per month. But they only made 17,000 clicks on search results.

If you open Google and search for “Donald Trump age”, you will see why the majority of searches do not result in any clicks on the search results.

Google and search for “Donald Trump age”

Google and search for “Donald Trump age”

Conversely, when you search for “which brand of washing machine to buy, you can click on several results to get opinions from different websites. Result: The number of clicks is higher than the actual number of searches.

Result: Number of clicks "which brand washing machine should buy"

Result: Number of clicks "which brand washing machine should buy"

Cost Per Click (CPC)

CPC shows the average cost of a click on a paid search result for a given keyword.

Cost Per Click (CPC) is a dynamic number

Cost Per Click (CPC) is a dynamic number

Cost Per Click (CPC) is a dynamic and highly volatile number that changes rapidly as advertisers increase or decrease their ad spend.

As for the CPC values you see in Ahrefs – They are just averages.

Traffic Value

The metric shows the value of your website's organic traffic, if that traffic was purchased through Google AdWords.

Are you feeling confused? Let me explain: Here is one of the keywords that the GTV blog ranks for: “seo”:

GTV Blog Rank: “seo”

GTV Blog Rank: “seo”

You see, with this keyword the website can get 872 visits per month from organic search and has a CPC of $0.4. So to get 872 hits by bidding on this keyword in Google AdWords, it would cost me $348.4 ($0.4 * 872 clicks).

But that's just for one keyword. So, what if we did this calculation for all the 27,000+ keywords the GTV blog ranks for, and then added all the numbers together?

Answer: GTV will receive a Traffic Value of $51,400. You can see here:

The amount of Traffic Value that GTV website receives

The amount of Traffic Value that GTV website receives

As with organic traffic metrics, these are estimates only. If you actually bid on this keyword in Google AdWords, you probably won't lose exactly $0.4 per click. Because Google AdWords is an auction.

Difference of Live / Recent / Historical Links

When you look at website information at Ahrefs, you probably also pay attention to metrics like “Live / Recent / Historical”.

On Ahrefs, information like Live / Recent / Historical is also displayed.

On Ahrefs, information like Live / Recent / Historical is also displayed.

When Ahrefs crawls the web, it also re-crawls the data it previously collected. It also happens that website A has backlinks to you, but when Ahrefs collects it from website A, they don't see that backlink anymore.

As a result, Ahrefs will exclude these links from Live Links. But Ahrefs still statistics the lost links in the last 3-4 months with Recent Links, and statistics all live Links and lost Links in the life cycle of a website with Historical Links. From there, we can take specific action to restore that lost backlink.

As shown below, my GTV has 3.28K Referring Domain but only 3.05K Referring Domain is alive. So I should somehow recover the remaining 200 Referring Domains!

GTV has 3.28k Referring Domains but only 3.05k Referring Domains are alive
