Google Algorithm Update: 8 Things SEOer Needs to Do

Google Algorithm Update: 8 Things Every SEOer Needs To Do

On September 27, the website SEO community witnessed a round of Google algorithm updates that made keyword rankings change rapidly. This makes many SEO self-learners miserable because they don't know how to handle it.

Nearly 2 months later, since the Google Medic algorithm update (August 1, 2018), the account of Danny Sullivan - who is responsible for the communication between Google engineers and users to collect data. feedback from which to improve Google's algorithm system - confirmed that the search engine giant just made a "minor" algorithm update. This update was enough for the website to see a noticeable (if not spectacular) change in both traffic and keyword rankings.

And most recently – in March 2019, Google had an update that made the website rankings suddenly change. Understanding the factors that affect SEO rankings is becoming more and more necessary for any SEOer.

I know you're expecting me to explain this algorithm update well, and also how to improve & restore, even make the website even stronger?

But maybe, you will have to wait until the next article!

In this article I will not give a specific solution for this algorithm.

Because simply, even if we try to follow Google's rules, we can still be negatively affected by other things.

Exactly what this article will cover: “ What should you do when Google updates its algorithm ”.

1. View information from the right source

Immediately after the announcement of the Google algorithm update was released, hundreds and thousands of bloggers wrote about it.

However, not all of these sources are reliable.

I'm not saying these bloggers have bad intentions, but chances are, they didn't have the correct source of information. Or they perform improper testing to determine the effect of the algorithm.

You may be wondering what resources you should follow?

In fact, in my opinion there are very few websites where we can trust and follow their instructions.

Here are 4 websites and also 4 main sources of information about updates, including:

The Official Google Webmaster Central Blog is an extremely reliable source of information.

This is where Google technicians share official announcements when they want to go public about Google's algorithm updates . However, Google rarely shares details about any update.

Next, the remaining 3 sources of information are:

  1. Search Engine Journal
  2. Search Engine Land
  3. Search Engine Roundtable

This is where journalists and industry experts will post the latest information about Google and search engines in general (including Bing, Yandex and others).

Obviously, the number of sources will not only be that.

You can also follow other blogs like:

  1. Moz
  2. Backlinks
  3. Cognitive SEO
  4. Neil Patel
  5. Marie Haynes

Blogs like these will provide information a little later, but they'll also often break it down into step-by-step instructions, offering great advice and guidance.

In addition, you also get useful advice on SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Digital marketing from these blogs.

2. Check traffic and keyword rankings

The quickest way to find out if you're getting penalized (or if you're the only one) is to check your traffic and keyword rankings.

Note: If most of your pages are outside the top 50 , you may not see a big change in traffic, as these pages rarely get any traffic from Google.

However, in the opposite case, if the rankings of the keywords decrease, you will see the traffic decrease as well in Google Search Console.

Instructions for checking traffic & keyword rankings

Check traffic & keyword rankings with Google Search Console

Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools ) is a free webmaster tool provided by Google that allows you to monitor and manage your website.

Note: To apply this method, you need to install Google Search Console first. You can refer to the Complete article about Google Search Console as well as how to use it to optimize your website here.

Step 1: Log in to Google Search Console, select website >   Search results

Step 2: Click on the box “ Custom ” to choose the time frame:

After setting the date range, select Apply.

Choose a time frame on the Google Search Console tool to check traffic and keyword rankings.

Step 3: Scroll down, select “ Page ”. Select the Export button and choose the file format you want to export.

compare traffic after google update
Download a list of website traffic statistics and keyword rankings

Here I will want to compare metrics between 7 days ago and 7 days after Google updated the algorithm. (Or you can also customize this timeframe as you like)

Let me take the example of Google's algorithm update from September 27, 2018.

In this case, I will leave the timeframe from September 17, 2018 to September 24, 2018 and repeat steps 2.3 to get the data for the timeframe September 24, 2018 to October 1/ 2018.

Copy and merge the parameters of these 2 timeframes into 1 copy and compare:

Statistics on traffic change statistics, click-through rates and keyword rankings

Here you will have the total change on each website article URL in terms of clicks, impressions and position of that URL. From there, you can see the increase and decrease in traffic and website rankings.

Check traffic and website rankings with Ahrefs tool :

Step 1: Go to Ahrefs , enter the website address, select Movement, you can export the file when selecting “ Export ”

check ahrefs after google update
Go to Ahrefs > Enter the URL to check > Movement > Select Export

Export the file and download it to your computer, you will get the following content:

Statistics after google algorithm update
The complete statistical file for the website includes: Date, Previous Position, Current Position, Position Movement.

Specifically:

  • Date: Time of keyword ranking change
  • Previous Position: Previous keyword rank
  • Current Position: Current keyword rank
  • Position Movement: Change rank

Notice the change time, you only need to focus from September 27 (the date of the algorithm update) onwards and the amount of negative traffic (decreased traffic), positive traffic (increased traffic)

Note: We only check Organic Traffic , not the general type of traffic.

The updated Google penalties only apply to organic search results. Therefore, traffic coming from PPC and Social Media channels will not be counted in this traffic check.

If your website's rankings drop significantly, you may have been penalized by Google.

However, remember that:

As soon as you drop a few rankings, of course the algorithm update immediately pushes other competitors up.

So you need to proceed to the following next step…

3. Double-check before “doing something”

Improper lust, haste and impatience often ruin things. Make sure you do a thorough analysis before “doing something” like: Edit your website.

There are a lot of you inbox me asking about how to handle the website after being penalized. But they have not even considered whether their website is really being penalized or not!

A general rule is that you should check website traffic regularly .

It could be a week, a month, but you should monitor the traffic on a regular basis. If traffic and rankings don't drop at all, wait a while and then come back to check.

Of course, it is difficult to predict the future. Sometimes rankings/traffic will drop a bit, but then everything is back to normal.

That's why we shouldn't rush to edit our website without going through a thorough assessment and planning.

The worst is when you change everything on the site when the traffic is the same and the webiste's rankings are fine.

What I said sounds obvious. But to be honest, I have encountered many such cases. SEOer hastily adjusted the website when hearing about Google's algorithm update without knowing the status of his rankings & traffic.

You may have heard about: Algorithm updates targeting websites with keyword density greater than 5%?

However, do not rush to start removing keywords from articles. Especially if your site still ranks higher than other “competitors”.

Why?

Because:

Changes in pages can really attract Google bots to crawl and re-check your own site.

Therefore, even if you think it helps to improve your content or website, the result is very likely to go in the opposite direction – your site could still drop in rankings.

If your website is ranking high, do not hesitate to change the content of your website!

4. Consult an expert

Perhaps you are looking forward to a name to consult? However, I will not give any names here. And I'm not going to give instructions on how to choose a good professional. You will have to do your own research and find the answer for yourself!

The only advice I can give you right now is to follow step 3 (just above). Do your due diligence and don't rush to make a decision.

expert on google update
Reasons to consult an expert

And what I'm about to say below will explain to you why you need an expert to restore your affected website after an update:

1/ Save time: An expert knowledgeable about SEO & Google algorithms will always know what to do, prioritize implementation and offer timely solutions. From there, optimizing the time to restore the website.

2/ Saves effort: You don't have to worry about making mistakes or making unnecessary edits that could potentially risk and damage your website.

3/ Save money: The longer your website is penalized, the more money you lose! Even if you have to pay to hire an expert to fix the web. The end result you get in terms of sales will be well worth the cost.

Getting expert help is the best and most effective way to deal with a Google penalty.

If you have enough experience with SEO and want to handle the website restoration yourself, you should get a second opinion from another professional before embarking on implementing any major changes to your website.

5. Website Audit

Any restoration work after a penalty should begin with a site audit.

Whenever you notice a significant change in traffic or keyword rankings, it's a good idea to check your site, even if it's the 5th time of the year.

Model of factors that need SEO Audit of the website when Google updates the algorithm

You will never know which plugin is causing the problem or what the dev team has missed.

>> If you need detailed system knowledge to help you have an overview of the seo implementation process and specific implementation, please refer to GTV's SEO Audit course ! Knowledge of SEO courses is drawn from the real experience of more than 100+ GTV seo projects.

So, there are 4 things that you should consider when doing a website audit:

a) Technical aspects

When new updates are released, Google rescans and rechecks websites. Old technical issues that Google had ignored (or failed to find) before could be cause for concern.

Are you confusing Google with an incorrect hreflang or canonical tag?

This does not matter if your page load speed is 3 seconds and all other competitors are 10 seconds.

However, if, after scanning your website, another competitor of yours is found by Google bot to have a page speed of 3 seconds, even with a better web structure, then you should conduct further optimization for your website. .

Backlinks seem to be an age-old problem. Even when Google says that the Penguin 4.0 Algorithm ignores spammy links, I still see quite a few recent stories of sites getting penalized after an SEO attack.

Issues related to backlinks will be related to Footprint issues, including:

  • Duplicate IP
  • PBN has no traffic
  • Same PBN Whois, Same Gmail
  • Pointing Circle
  • PBN often crashes host
  • PBN sex, gambling
  • PBNs have an unsightly theme (Google often considers these PBNs to be created to manipulate rankings, not a website that provides useful value to users)
  • Articles on PBN are copied from another source

c) Contents

Content is a very important part of a website. So make sure you don't confuse Google with duplicate content, Meta Description and Titles tags.

Adjust content after google update
Articles about the secret to standard SEO article content

In addition, you should compare your content writing style with existing competitors.

What do we need to improve on? Are there any other topics your competitors already have that you haven't mentioned?

If the website has sketchy content, or only mentions the products that your business is doing, Google will not favor your website!

A website that is highly appreciated by Google is a website that provides useful content FOR USERS.

To put it simply, besides mentioning the "greatness of products & services" that you are doing business, the website also needs to focus on guiding and providing information to support users to solve their problems. surname.

d) User experience (UX)

Many recent updates and algorithms (like RankBrain) focus heavily on user experience and how users interact with the site.

google update ux
Updating and optimizing customer experience for high efficiency

You can start by getting some friends to interact with your site. Then, give them specific website features, but don't tell them the steps to use that feature.

For example, ask them to message your website, contact your company's staff, send a message through a form, purchase a product or sign up for a newsletter, etc.

What you need to do now is give them the home page address, ask them to try out the features and note down the problems encountered.

Also, make sure they do all of this easily on both Mobile and desktop. And remember to pay special attention to mobile devices because this is a market that tends to grow quite strongly at present and even in the future.

You can also use tools like UserTesting for input, or ask a UX expert to view the site and give helpful advice.

6. Exclude the possibility that the website is affected by the update

If the drop in traffic occurred shortly after the algorithm update was announced, it doesn't mean the update was to blame.

Check Google Algorithm Update Notifications

As mentioned earlier, during an algorithm update, Google may look at your site and find some ambiguity.

This can also be a manual penalty, so check Google Search Console. Usually you'll get a notice of the penalty, the reason, and some steps that need to be fixed. Once the issue is resolved, you can submit your site for review and re-evaluation.

In addition, there are times when you are more likely to fall victim to an SEO attack. And more dangerous is that you will never know what is harmful to the website until you audit it again. That's also why I recommend step 5 – Website Audit.

7. Website Recovery Strategy

Next, let's work on drafting a restoration plan.

The secret to successfully restoring your website is a priority.

You can find a lot of problems with your website, but if you start fixing things that are not so important, you will end up wasting a lot of money, time and effort. Because they will not improve too much and the end result is that the website ranking is still not high.

So, having a clear strategy is essential because it not only helps you get things done faster, but also more efficiently.

restore google update website
Create a clear step-by-step recovery strategy

If you don't monitor your site regularly, you'll never know what's causing the penalty!

Once you've completed a step on the overall edit, take a moment to see if it works.

Doing everything at once won't help you find the cause of the penalty. So you won't be able to know what to avoid in the future.v

8. Continue to implement SEO well

In most cases (as long as the site isn't completely deindexed), the best way to get rid of the penalty is to continue doing good SEO.

Punishment is similar to obesity. If you gain a little bit of weight every day, you won't notice. But until one day, you stand in front of the mirror and suddenly realize this truth.

Losing weight fast is almost impossible. If you gain 10kg in a year, expect to take about 1 year to lose fat!

Trying to run 5 hours a day won't work because in general you won't be able to sustain. Trying other negatives, such as weight loss pills and strict diets, can get you into more trouble.

The best solution is to keep doing the right things for a long time and the results will come.

In this case, apply the knowledge that I share at the GTV SEO blog to implement SEO for your website to bring the best results.

To sum up

Honestly, it's hard to know how long it will take for a website to recover from a penalty. Maybe 2 weeks or maybe 2 years? That's why you should always follow Google's EAT rules .

For sustainable development, play by the rules!

Has your website been affected after the last algorithm update? Do you always see fluctuations in traffic on your site? Has your website ever been penalized?

And… more importantly, have you ever recovered & turned on your "power" to become stronger after receiving a penalty? How can you revive your website after that update?

Share it with me in the comments below!

Good luck!
