What are Textlinks? Instructions for using Text Link safely when implementing SEO

With a series of google algorithm updates continuously, especially penguin has made us change a lot in the way we use backlinks .

Unlike in the times of 2012 - 2013 and earlier when the number of backlinks was focused. Nowadays, the quality and relevance of backlinks are emphasized more than ever in SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

What is External Link ? Importance of external links in SEO?

At this point, if you decide to invest in using text links (or sitewide links) it can become more dangerous than ever since google announced you to remove backlinks from the widget.

This article was created to explain what a textlink is as well as how to use textlink (sitewide link) effectively & sustainably in the Vietnamese SEO market and the Global (global) market.

But before I start, I have to explain to you what a Textlink is first…

explain textlink
Let's find out what is Texlink!

Let me take an illustrative example, on my menu bar, there is a registration page for reputable SEO  services and HCM SEO services (picture below).

And because this is the link to the menu. So when user visit almost all other articles/pages on gtvseo.com you will still see this link.

If this is a backlink pointing to domain A, then this domain A will have the entire number of backlinks based on the number of articles/pages that this link still exists at GTV.

With Google Penguin increasingly focused on backlinks.

The question is:

Do sitewide links really have a positive effect in SEO or are they bad?

What are the SEO effects of textlinks? Regardless of whether you go through any SEO tactic to get backlinks, the most important thing is still relevance.

For example: website gtvseo.com has SEO content. I can get any backlink, even sitewide link (text link) in menu, widget, footer, etc. It will be extremely relevant and natural.

A spammy backlink, google considers unnatural when you put sitewide backlinks on plane tickets to gtvseo.com or anchor text content about massage chairs.

Before I take a closer look at this, let's take a look at what Matt Cutts has to say about links and how Google sees them (whether as a backlink or a sitewide link):

Matt Cutts made a clear point in this video:

Also, linking from the footers of blogs like “Website developed by XYZ company” or “theme designed by ABC” is not as useful as it used to be. Because you can't control where these links come from.

Maybe in the Vietnamese market you still find it partially effective. But in the global market - global, you are easy to get "broken" by google.

Basically, your textlinks are not a wise and safe strategy for your site if you are using non-website related textlinks.

Again, Relevance is the key to this game .

But why are there so many websites with sitewide links that still make it to the top?

There are many reasons but I will list you 2 typical reasons:

They already have a good amount of backlinks

Let's say this website has 60 quality backlinks to the website and then they use 3 unrelated textlinks. Now they may not be affected at all because they already have credibility.

They're already at the top

What I want to say here is that, in the past, it is true that textlinks were still very effective from 2014 to 2015 and earlier (it is even a little effective in the current Vietnamese market).

So at this point they can get to the top with the textlink. And one feature when they are at the top for a while is…

  • A lot of traffic to the website
  • Attract more natural backlinks

This forms an extremely strong shield for them when google algorithm updates. More or less they will avoid the "penalties" of google.

The importance of textlinks
Textlinks still play an important role in SEO

The above are 2 main reasons why some websites still keep the top position despite using related textlinks.

But even if you use related textlinks, you have to be really careful. If not, you can still be penalized by google as usual.

Here are…

Don't buy multiple textlinks at once

Be extremely careful and never abuse textlinks. This means that you should not try to buy multiple textlinks at once (especially with a new website).

Too many backlinks to your website at once will look very unnatural in the eyes of search engines.

Imagine that you have a new website or a website with about 100 -200 backlinks.

And.. Kaboommmm…

200,000 backlinks to your website in just 5 days.

Isn't it a bit fictitious?

backlinks look fictitious

Of course you can have a lot of backlinks pouring back to your website in a short time. But it means other factors follow.

For example, there are thousands/tens of thousands of shares, blog comments , thousands/tens of thousands of traffic to the website/article, etc.

At this point it will become more natural because all other factors are balanced. It's like you just ran a big marketing campaign so it could still be fine. (most of you 99.99% can't do that).

Number of text links used

You should not consider using textlinks as a primary method of SEO. Just thinking that 80% of your backlink domain is sitewide link is not good at all.

Regarding the percentage of textlinks with other types of backlinks on the website, each experienced SEO person will have a different advice. Some say 5%, some say 10%.

At MOA Academy, Mr. Hoang Duong Phi Hung recommends that you use about 10 - 25%. As for me, just to be safe, you should max out at 10% because it will make the backlinks more natural.

You can refer to GTV's SEO articles at the blog .

Remember, these textlinks are all related.

Epilogue

The above are my own opinions, knowledge and experience when using textlink. Hopefully with my explanation of what a textlink is as well as its role and usage will be of some help to you.

But please note that, text link is a double-edged sword in use so be careful in the process of using it.

Good luck!
